Governance

The CHCR’s Advisory Council provides leadership input and expertise to guide the Centre’s endeavours, projects, and development. Composed of leaders in government, academia, and industry, the Council provides advice and guidance on the strategic and operational future direction of the CHCR.

The Management Board — composed of University of Prince Edward Island administrative and faculty leaders — supports the Director in meeting the CHCR’s goals, in mentoring the Centre’s staff and in providing internal oversight for the CHCR’s operations and finances.

Dr. Jürgen Krause is a professor in the Faculty of Business at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and serves as the director of the Centre for Health and Community Research (CHCR) which he founded in 2009. He earned his Master and PhD degrees from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and performed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago in USA.

Before moving into education, Dr. Krause served in several operational and strategic capacities in the Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical industry. During his time in industry, he held senior and executive positions in research and development, manufacturing and quality management, project management, pipeline and portfolio management as well as strategy development. He also successfully championed global company initiatives and a number of industry/university collaborations and led alliances with other industry partners. He spent eighteen years with Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in both the European and United States offices and four years with Millennium Pharmaceuticals (now Takeda Pharmaceuticals) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as Vice President R&D Strategy & Operations.

Dr. Krause joined the Faculty of Business at UPEI in July 2008 and served as the Dean of the Faculty from 2013 until 2019. From 2010 until 2020 Dr. Krause also served as an adjudication committee member on the Idea to Innovation Grants Program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Lisa most recently served as the Assistant Deputy Minister – Mental Health and Addictions.  Before her role with the Department, she served as the acting Executive Director at Health PEI.   She has extensive experience in addictions programming in Prince Edward Island and with the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba.

Lisa has played an instrumental role in overseeing operations for provincial  inpatient and Community Mental Health and Addictions. She has sat on provincial, federal, and territorial committees and has played a significant role in the development and promotion of Health PEI strategies and goals. Lisa brings a wealth of policy oversight and strategic planning to her work and fosters approaches that deliver high-quality health care, retention, and recruitment.

Lisa holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island and a Master of Arts in Psychology and Counselling from Yorkville University.

Joanne Crampton

Assistant Commissioner (A/Commr.) Joanne Crampton, Rtd., M.O.M., retired from the RCMP in 2019 with 31 years of service. During the course of her career, she served in high-profile and senior operational, administrative, and executive leadership roles. She has an extensive background in intelligence and operations, and in her last role oversaw serious and organized crime, cybercrime, financial crime, human trafficking, and border integrity at a national and international level. She has extensive experience working with governments of all levels and has provided subject matter expertise and advice to Ministers and Deputy Ministers at both federal and provincial levels.

As a senior police leader working coast to coast, A/Commr. Crampton assisted communities to build resilience through crime prevention and community safety. She has operationalized crime reduction strategies that not only reduced crime and enhanced public safety, but reduced recidivism and provided time for more proactive, community-based policing opportunities. She has testified on various public safety issues before Senate and Parliamentary Committees, providing a policing perspective to decision-makers responsible for amending and implementing legislation. She also testified at the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry on the issue of human trafficking, providing subject matter expertise on the policing response as well as the impact this crime has on the victims, their families, and the community.

Since her retirement, A/Commr. Crampton has worked with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) as a Senior Policing Consultant in Canada’s response to the pandemic. She provided enforcement guidance and advice, acting as a liaison between PHAC and multiple policing and public safety agencies across the country.

A/Commr. Crampton is a recipient of the RCMP Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, a Commanding Officer’s Commendation, and in 2015 was appointed as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces for her service to the community and leadership in policing. In 2018, she was a visiting fellow on an executive leadership program in Canada and Hong Kong and has since been a visiting fellow in Australia providing mentoring to leaders in policing and emergency services. She currently works for Deloitte Canada as a Senior Advisor in Security & Justice, supporting their work in public safety and policing with one of their priorities being community safety & well-being.

Dr. Teodoro Forcht Dagi

Dr. Teodoro Forcht Dagi has a highly distinguished career in neurosurgery, neuroscience, venture capital and education. He is a faculty member at both the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Science and Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland, where he has chaired the advisory panel for both the Faculty of Medicine and School of Management. He lectures at Harvard Business School and the Venture Capital Institute.

Dr. Dagi graduated with his Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University at the age of twenty-two and held the Neuroresearch Foundation Fellowship and Harvard University’s Joseph P Kennedy, Jr. Fellowship. He was the first neurosurgeon to be elected the College of Critical Care Medicine Fellow. He earned a Master in Business Administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded a Doctor of Medical Science (honoris causae) from Queen’s University for his service to the public and in the field of medicine, and a second honorary doctorate from the Kaunas Technical University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

In his early career, Dr. Dagi served as a flight surgeon and combat neurosurgeon where he pioneered mobile ICU systems and innovative PET scanning technology. He has held numerous roles in advising the United States government on matters of health care including serving as medical consultant to the Office of Technology Assessment for the US Congress and consultant to the FDA for drugs and devices in neurology. He was awarded a US Humanitarian Service Medal.

The evidence of Dr. Dagi’s outstanding excellence and leadership in his field of practice and training in neurosurgery is exemplified by his roles as Chair of the Georgia Neurosurgical Society, Director of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Chair of the Committee on Perioperative Care for the American College of Surgeons. He has also advanced the field of education, serving as the Board of Director for the Georgia Institute of Technology and Member of the Alumni Board of Advisors for Wharton School. He has advised national and international governments and universities, including those of Canada, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Chile, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, research institutions across the US and Canada, and the Royal Bank of Canada, on topics ranging from translational medicine and the biomedical sciences to new technology development and commercialization.

Dr. Dagi’s talent has extended to the field of entrepreneurship with the founding of a venture capital fund for university biomedical spin-outs. He is a veteran director at privately held and publicly traded companies. He has also served as a partner in several venture capital funds, and is now the Senior Managing Director of Rosc Global, Ltd., the successor to the Monitor Group.

In 2012, Dr. Dagi was named the Sir Thomas and Edith Dixon Medalist. Separately, he was awarded ad hominem fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh, where he now serves as an international surgical advisor and a member of the Surgical Specialty Board in Neurological Surgery.

He has written and edited eight books and monographs, over 200 chapters and articles and has serveds as an editor for Neurosurgery, Numanities, the Journal of Medical Simulation and the Journal of Clinical Ethics.

Dr. Dagi lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

Mark Leggott

Mr. Mark Leggott is the Director of International Relations at the New Digital Research Organization (NDRIO), and until March 2022, Executive Director of Research Data Canada (RDC). Mark’s role with NDRIO is to facilitate international linkages and determine emerging best practices and standards in research data management, research software, and advanced research computing. Beginning in March 2022, RDC will become part of NDRIO.

After earning a bachelor of science from St. Mary’s University, Mr. Leggott continued with a Master of Science in Biology at the University of Calgary and a Master of Library Information Science at Dalhousie University.

Prior to his position with RDC and NDRIO, Mr. Leggott served as the Associate Dean of Education and University Librarian at the University of Winnipeg and then as University Librarian at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Mr. Leggott’s innovative ideas led to the founding of the Islandora Foundation, which was awarded the 2010 Innovation Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries. A passionate advocate for the concept of open source, he used the open-source technology developed for Islandora to create a digital-asset preservation and management software company called discoverygarden inc., where he also served as President and CEO from 2010 to 2011.

Dr. Greg Naterer

Prior to his appointment at UPEI, Dr. Naterer served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland (2012 – 2022), where he led substantial growth in faculty, enrolments, and research capacity. Dr. Naterer has served in prominent leadership roles in education and research, nationally and internationally. He was the Chair of Canada’s National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science (NCDEAS). He chaired the NSERC Discovery Grant Committee (Mechanical Engineering) and currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer.

For his leadership contributions at an international level, Dr. Naterer was awarded the K.Y. Lo Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC). He received the Jules Stachiewicz Medal of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering for his contributions to heat transfer and fluid mechanics. He was awarded the EIC Julian C. Smith Medal for exceptional achievements in the development of Canada. Dr. Naterer also received a Best Professor Teaching Award from the Engineering Student Society.

Dr. Naterer’s research interests lie in the fields of energy systems, thermodynamics and heat transfer. Previously he was a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Advanced Energy Systems. Dr. Naterer was born in Toronto, Ontario, and received his BMath (Applied Mathematics), MASc (Mechanical Engineering) and PhD (Mechanical Engineering) degrees from the University of Waterloo.

As Chief Information Officer at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Mr. Dana Sanderson leads the transformation UPEI’s information technology system with the goal of bringing it to the forefront of technological innovation. Mr. Sanderson has proven leadership in strategy, implementation, governance and risk analysis.

Over the past thirty-five years, Mr. Sanderson served in management positions with JD Irving that included Director of Enterprise Solutions, Director Information Technology for the Transportation Division, Director of Strategic Planning for the IT Division and Director of Business Solutions.

After receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration from UPEI, Mr. Sanderson continued his studies with a Master of Business Administration at the University of Ottawa.

Mr. Sanderson’s leadership and excellence were recognized with his selection as a finalist for the 2019 Chief Information Officer of the Year award from the Information Technology Association of Canada.

An active member of and contributor to his field, Mr. Sanderson is a Board Member of both the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers and CANARIE’s National Research and Education Network. He is also UPEI’s representative for New Digital Research Infrastructure Organization (NDRIO) and the NB-PEI Electronic Communication Network (ECN).

Dr. Christina Murray, BA, RN, PhD is an Associate Professor with the School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island. Christina holds a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology/Philosophy) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Prince Edward Island, a Master of Nursing degree from the University of Calgary and a Doctor of Philosophy (Nursing) from the University of Calgary. Her nursing practice has been grounded in population health promotion, and community development.

Christina’s research examines family experiences of labor migration and how this impacts the health of individuals, families and communities. She is currently the Principal Investigator for a SSHRC funded project exploring the intergenerational family stories of labor migration in rural Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island. Embracing narrative inquiry as a relational qualitative methodology, Christina believes in working with research participants in ways which stress collaboration and co-participation. She has a keen interest in the use of innovative and arts-based approaches to knowledge translation, aligning research text to visual arts and photography.

Dr. Tarek Mady earned his Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration from the University of Alexandria in 1995. He then continued his education with a Master in Science in Finance from Louisiana State University and Doctor of Philosophy in Marketing and International Business from Old Dominion University.

In 2015, Dr. Mady joined the Faculty of Business at the University of Prince Edward Island and now has twenty years of combined experience in teaching and academia. As an award-winning teacher, Dr. Mady has also held positions at other academic institutions including Concordia University and the American University in Dubai.

Dr. Mady is actively engaged in advancing scholarly communication as a Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of Global Marketing. He is also involved in editorial and leadership roles with the Journal of Business Research, the International Journal of Emerging Markets and the 2019 and 2020 Annual Academy of Marketing Science Conferences. In fact, Dr. Mady was awarded the Taylor and Francis Certificate of Recognition for his role with the Journal of Global Marketing in both 2017 and 2019.

With numerous active memberships in organizations such as the American Marketing Association, the Academy of Marketing Science and the Academy of International Business, Dr. Mady is clearly committed to his field of academic study. He was awarded Fellowships at the Society for Marketing Advances Doctoral Consortium and the 38th Annual American Marketing Association Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium.

Dr. Rebecca Reed-Jones

Dr. Reed-Jones obtained her PhD in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph in Ontario. Her educational training was based in the areas of biomechanics and motor control of human movement. Dr. Reed-Jones’ research focuses on sensory system integration and its role in the execution of motor tasks such as walking and standing. Her research has both clinical and basic science components combining the fundamentals of neuroscience with the techniques of biomechanics.

Her main health-related research to date has involved special populations such as athletes with concussions and individuals with Parkinson’s disease. In addition, she works with older adults to understand the healthy aging process and its role in mobility issues and risk of falling.

Dr. Evans (Métis) prior to embarking on an academic career was Senior Partner and CEO for KPMG Consulting for Central Eastern Europe and prior to that appointment was Partner in Charge of Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Energy for the London, U.K. office of KPMG for tax, audit and consulting. As a partner in a professional firm Dr. Evans spend substantial amount of time with corporate boards and the executive management of major international corporations.

After retiring from professional practice Dr. Evans has dedicated his time to research and teaching at the University of Prince Edward Island and completed his PhD in Corporate Governance at Liverpool John Moores University. Dr. Evans continues researching corporate boards globally and is on the editorial board of three academic journals, has been the guest editor for special corporate governance journal publications and is considered a leading author within the field of corporate governance. Dr. Evans developed the Board Culture Theory using Classical Grounded Theory. Dr. Evans’s research crosses many areas including: music, indigenous knowledge, corporate governance, disruptive technology and grounded theory. Dr Evans is a participating partner with Luminary a national non-profit indigenous organization supporting indigenous research and business development across Canada.
